Last week was exceptionally busy even by my new life standards. I had an appointment to meet my new PCP and my husband scheduled a photoshoot for the farm, which included some family shots of us and the dog.
By the time we hit Saturday, I was done being a person. So, I spent the entire day without touching my laptop, hands curled around my PS5 controller. The amount of Baldur’s Gate 3 that I played was equivalent to a workday, and I have no regrets.
Well, some regrets. The relationship dynamics of the game are so dramatic, and I keep accidentally hurting other characters’ feelings because I feel bad saying no to anyone when they come on to my apparently irresistable druid character.
I made it to Act 2, though, which is exciting!
What I’ve Been Up To
Work/Writing
I made many more words about video games last week, churned out another Disney article for the blog I write for, and worked on the still secret project of secrets.
I’ve been missing my more casual/personal stuff on Medium and hoping I’ll work up the stamina to get back to it soon.
General Life Updates
After a long and frustrating search, I finally established care with a local doctor. Her office is only 5 minutes from my house, and has a massive parking lot. Coming from the agonizing nightmare of the overfull parking garage at my old doctor’s office, it was such a relief to have a short trip and easy parking situation.
This is the first time I’ve made small talk with a stranger since starting the new job, and I accidentally shattered the very nice nurse’s worldview when I told her I write about video games. She started to ask how I wrote about them if I didn’t play them, then slowly realized that even though I am a woman it was possible that I played video games. After that she had about a million questions for me, which was pretty adorable to be honest.
I got my flu shot and chatted about my overall health. Some time this week I need to go get blood drawn for routine blood work, so there’s that still on the agenda.
Otherwise, nothing much to report from last week. Still adapting to the colder weather and being cranky about it.
Current Obsessions
Gaming
Obviously, I’ve been very into Baldur’s Gate 3 and am excited to see how the story unfolds. And if I ever manage to make Astarion mine, which of course will mean devastating current in-game boyfriend Wyll.
I also picked up the new Spider-Man 2 video game because it’s going to be a popular conversation topic at work this week, and as a huge Spider-Man fan I felt I couldn’t not be up on the game. It’s a bit complex for me as it uses buttons I didn’t even realize were buttons on the PS5 controller, but I’m getting there.
Food
I grabbed some new cookbooks last week and have been enjoying trying out some new breakfast recipes. A cookbook that comes with an entire section of overnight oats and another section of breakfast cookies is very much a book for me.
For those who were wondering, the video game cookbook I got was The Elder Scrolls Cookbook, and I can’t wait to dive in to that one. I’m going to make cheese scones for our D&D session this week, because it’s a great excuse to make something with cheese (which my husband doesn’t eat).
Words on the Web
Another week of churning out video game content and generally cracking away at other freelance side projects.
I started the week with my Detective Pikachu Returns review, which was pretty fun to write. It’s a short game for the price, but had some cute moments.
For spooky season, I also wrote about fan frustrations with ghosts in The Sims 4 and how they’re mostly just annoying translucent Sims rather than actual ghosts.
And that’s about it for writing highlights this week! Also got a few blog posts out for the old book blog and started drafting some personal essay type stuff for Medium. Hope you have a great week ahead!
I can't believe the nurse thought it was impossible you played video games since you're a girl and that's clearly a boy / nerd thing. I'm shocked and offended on your behalf.
See, now you've got me wanting a PS5 because then I too could play BG3 but also Spider-Man 2. I loved the first one so much!
